Rainy Day Romance - Megan & Rory's Marquee Wedding

Here at Hyland Weddings, we find that every love story is unique, and Megan and Rory’s wedding in the grounds of Sidmouth Rugby Club was no exception. And, despite the unexpected weather challenges (it was meant to be one of the hottest days in July but it actually turned out to be one of the wettest), their celebration was a magical marquee affair!

The day before the wedding was a flurry of activity as the bride, groom, wedding party and caterers were on hand to help our wedding planning team to set up the marquee (provided by Oakleaf Marquees) and style the tables.Together, we set the stage for the outdoor wedding of dreams. The theme? A white wedding in every sense, with off white cheesecloth runners and breath taking table centrepieces adorned with the most beautiful blooms by Dilly’s Florist. The place settings were a particular favourite of ours, featuring hand-drawn pictures of each wedding guest, which was a labour of love by the bride’s very crafty sister. The attention to detail didn’t stop there! A cocktail station awaited, complete with mismatched glassware that was perfect for a post-dinner cocktail hour. Inside, a last-minute addition that we named ‘the conservatory’ in a pop-up gazebo featured a cosy seating area, with a children’s corner filled with games. Every detail showcases the thoughtfulness and creativity that the couple shared.

Despite the initial anticipation of a scorching summer’s day, Mother Nature had different plans for Megan and Rory’s wedding day, with rain becoming an unexpected guest. However, we whipped up a Plan B to ensure that nothing could dampen the spirits of the soon-to-be newlyweds and their loved ones. Following a heartfelt ceremony in the local church, guests were meant to stroll to the putting green for a spot of golf as a nod to the couple’s very first date. The rain did however alter these plans, so instead we led everyone back to the marquee for beer pong (which always goes down a storm), flip cup and the tunes of a string quartet. Laughter echoed throughout the marquee, proving that a splash of rain couldn’t wash away the happiness of the occasion.

Megan and Rory opted for something a little different to the traditional introduction for their sit-down wedding breakfast, and instead ordered a ‘photo dash’, which was a lively and entertaining way to capture moments with each guest. With the MC guiding the proceedings, each table took a turn dashing to the dance-floor for a quick snapshot with the happy couple. This was a fun alternative to a group photograph too! The string quartet continued to serenade guests during their meal, surprising them with upbeat renditions including‘Still Dre’ by Dr. Dre. After the heartfelt speeches, an ice cream van arrived to sweeten the evening, accompanied by the bride’s father playing a set, which was a truly lovely touch. Meanwhile, the rain outside created a cosy and intimate atmosphere within the marquee.

As the evening celebrations began, Megan and Rory stole a moment by the sea with Kat McLeod and SBK. The rain created a stunning backdrop for their wedding photographs! They then returned to the marquee in their evening attire, making a grand entrance before dancing to the song, ‘You Make My Dreams ComeTrue’. Despite the weather’s twists and turns, Megan and Rory’s wedding day was one to remember and for all the right reasons – their guests certainly had the best time! It was a pleasure to work with the newlyweds to bring their big day to life, and we hope you enjoy scrolling through a snippet of their special day.
